The L.A. Times defines emotional health as “the ability to maintain a sense of well-being in spite of life’s challenges and stresses”. 

This means that we should take care of our emotions and psychological state in order to be able to cope with the difficulties in life and not be overwhelmed by them. In life, struggles and problems that can wear us down will never be avoided and we know that the pandemic has brought it too worse. But the thing is, things that can wear us down emotionally can be overcome. We can win the struggles that we might go through life no matter how big and many the struggles are. That is why the need to be emotionally healthy is very important.  

Here are Seven Things to Do to Be Emotionally Healthy 

1. Stay in Contact with Others

We are social beings. The need to belong to a group is natural, and it helps us overcome emotional problems. Staying with others helps us combat depression, loneliness, or anxiety for example. Being with people who encourage and support us is an essential key in maintaining good mental health. Words of encouragement will uplift us and will remind us that there is hope in any situation. Staying in contact with others is an essential key in stress management. 

2. Get a Good Night’s Rest

We tend to be more emotional at night, and the lack of sleep can make it worse. In a study, subjects were given a difficult puzzle to solve. One group was allowed to sleep afterwards, while the other group was not. The group that slept experienced less anger and frustration from being unable to solve the puzzle, as well as less anxiety about failing to complete it at all. A good sleep is one of the important factors that improve mental wellbeing and to manage emotional stress. 

3. Take Care of Your Body

Taking care of your body is not just for you to look good, but it is also for you to feel good. Taking care of your body helps you in many ways and your physical health is important for emotional health. It can be a way to manage stress and keep anxiety at bay. It can help you overcome depression or get out of bed when you are feeling low on energy. Taking care of your body may seem like an overwhelming task but it can be done in small steps that will make you feel better overall. A healthy body is one of the factors to avoid mental health problem.

4. Do Something You Enjoy

We are not just our thoughts and feelings. We are also our actions. By doing things that you enjoy, you can boost your mental health, have a better mood, and feel more connected to the world around you. When we do things that we love we will be happy and have the sense of fulfillment 

5. Have a Gratitude Journal

Gratitude journals are one way to boost our moods. They can help us overcome negative emotions by keeping a record of the good things that happen in life. 

6.Be Positive 

Positive thinking is a state of mind that allows you to think about all the good things happening in your life. When you are positive, you feel happy and satisfied with your life. 

It is natural for people to experience negative thoughts every now and then; however, if these thoughts start to dominate your conscious thoughts, then it is time to change your mindset. Changing negative thoughts into positive ones  

Positive thinking can help you overcome emotional problems such as anxiety, depression and stress. It can also give you a sense of control over your life and boost up your self-confidence.

7. Remember That You Are Not Alone 

There are times we might feel lonely but the truth is we are never alone. Friends and loved ones might not be there for us all the time but God will be there. He promised those who believed in Him that He will never leave nor forsake them. In fact, His name is “Emmanuel” which means “God with us”. No matter how big the problem is, God is still bigger. You might ask yourself with the question, “Will God help me?” Yes, of course, because He loves you more than you know. Jesus is a God who is near to the brokenhearted, a refuge a fortress and an ever-present help in times of trouble. Only He can truly heal and lift us up from the saddest part of our lives. Not our possessions, not time nor any other else. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. Believe and you will be saved. A promise that will last to eternity.
